MASTERING SOCIAL MEDIA FOR RESTAURANTS: NINE EXPERT TIPS

By Andrea Sonne, social media manager at Wonderful Copenhagen

In the whirl of daily tasks and with a new menu to be introduced, how does a restaurant leave its mark on social media today? Here, I provide nine strategies for enhancing your restaurant’s social media platforms, focusing on boosting the joy and efficiency of the Social Media Manager’s role.

Crafting engrossing content and being present online is surprisingly straightforward. It involves creating content that aligns seamlessly with your strategy, exudes beauty, and is written with an affectionate twinkle that appeals to both old and new audiences. This content should engage in conversations across the spectrum and span multiple platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Google Business, and TripAdvisor.

At the same time, you try to ignore that there’s always a new field to explore, such as TikTok, that resonates with a much younger crowd. Straightforward, yes. Easy? No. In today’s realm, social media equals word-of-mouth, expanding the empire of flavors beyond the plate and where recommendations extend beyond close circles. Recognize this conversation-spreading power? Establishing a social media presence is imperative.

1. Craft a distinctive online flavor

Like your signature dish, your restaurant’s social media presence should be distinctive. Your unique style should echo in every post, evoking an experience through the screen. Consistency in tone, color palette, and style will resonate with your audience and make your brand more unforgettable.

2. Embrace humanity

Your social media content should consistently inspire instead of being informative. Your channels are neither a newsletter nor a press release. Abandon the overly polished and formal tone, cast aside footnotes, and reveal the restaurant’s personality by being an engaged and entertaining voice in the vast sea of content.

3. Hashtags: The proper seasoning

As the proper seasoning enhances a dish, hashtags can amplify your reach. Research trending and relevant hashtags in the culinary world and your local scene and create a unique branded hashtag to encourage diners to share their experiences, turning them into brand advocates.

4. Engage and build community

Social media is a two-way street. Respond to comments, answer queries, and engage in conversations. Show your appreciation for user-generated content and reviews, cultivating a sense of community that will make your followers feel connected and valued.

5. User-centric always

Guests at a restaurant invest their time and attention, anticipating an attentive approach. It's the same on social media, and the content must mirror a chef's dedication. While you might not consistently achieve absolute perfection, your content should solely focus on the followers' desires rather than appeasing vendors, associates, culinary committees, or restaurant owners. If you discover yourself sharing something that doesn’t excite you, you’ve veered off course from this philosophy.

6. The visual feast of social media

Develop 5-10 content genres (dish of the day, video interviews, interior), and have them at your fingertips. Snap a vertical photo whenever you take a horizontal one. If you’re recording a video, also capture a snippet suitable for an Instagram story. Find your visual style, be consistent, and invest in a professional camera if you can afford it. You won’t regret it.

7. Collaborate and cross-promote

Collaborations with influencers, local food bloggers, or neighboring businesses can enhance your visibility and credibility. Cross-promote each other's content to tap into new audiences and foster a sense of culinary camaraderie.

8. Respect platforms and algorithms

If your strategy revolves around specific media formats, it must be broader. Social media algorithms determine what types of content resonate. Don't battle them! If Facebook suddenly favors videos, create videos.

9. Analyze and adapt

As a chef tweaks a recipe to perfection, constantly analyze your social media performance. Use analytics tools to track engagement, reach, and audience demographics. Adapt your strategies based on data-driven insights to continually refine your digital presence.
